How we are working together

IEC has been using the Navigator to bring about a focus on competency-based learning and shift towards formative assessments and teacher development in the public schooling system.

Key concerns that Gooru Navigator is addressing:

• Bringing about a focus on competency-based learning.
• Shift towards formative assessments and teacher development.
• Access to real-time information on learning
• Technology that scale their efforts through laddered interventions

What they do

IEC facilitates a stakeholder-owned government schooling system that is equitable, accountable, and qualitative supporting children to develop multiple abilities. Presently IEC works in 9 states reaching more than 1.75 lakh children in 3600 rural primary government schools with 6010 teachers.

IEC has been implementing a capabilities-based learning approach and Navigated learning in Non- tech environments and has begun to introduce the Learning Navigator technology in phases in some of their work areas.

As a part of Navigated Learning without technology, IEC has been ensuring that:

• Student progress is tracked through portfolios/files
• Classroom processes are child-centric based on principles of learning
• Community processes are integrated into the approach- both by facilitating teacher development processes through teacher collectives and supporting local communities to participate in school development

Essentially the introduction of the Navigator has helped to locate and track student progress, facilitate access to the science of learning and support community efforts through the technology interventions.

Present areas of Learning Navigator technology implementation (laddered approach)

Pilot schools across Chhattisgarh state, 2 districts of Uttarakhand state and 1 block of Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh State

Areas of Navigated Learning Implementation- without technology intervention

States of Meghalaya, Telangana, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar

Outcomes:

1. A paradigmatic shift to a competency-based learning approach in pilot areas from a traditional textbook approach
2. A laddered intervention of supporting teachers through smartphones to teach and track the progress of students
3. Involvement of State level teachers in Competency framework and curriculum development
4. Implementation in regional languages such as Hindi
